Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has used a visit to Surrey to highlight the ‘secret crisis’ of domestic abuse.
She visited the North Surrey Domestic Abuse Outreach Centre with Robert Evans, Labour’s candidate for the newly created position of Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey.
Mrs Smith said: “Domestic Abuse represents one-quarter of all violent crime in Surrey.
“I am pleased to support Robert in making this a priority for his campaign for the November elections.”
Mr Evans explained funding for the vita service had been cut by nearly 50 per cent.
He said: “As Police and Crime Commissioner, I will ensure that this tops the priority list for Surrey Police.
“Just because, overall, Surrey is a wealthy county does not mean domestic abuse isn’t a major issue here. This is by no means an issue restricted to poorer areas.”
