Crystal Palace midfielder Marco Reich admits he thought his days were numbered at Selhurst Park before he was handed a shock recall to the Eagles starting line-up against Leicester City on Saturday.
The 29-year-old German international has started just one game under Palace boss Peter Taylor, the disappointing Carling Cup defeat against Notts County, and feared he may have to leave Selhurst Park in January.
But after two impressive performances for the reserves and an increased level of commitment in training, Reich has forced his way back into Taylor's plans.
"I was very pleased to be back and have a chance," said Reich.
"If I didn't play until December, I may have had to look elsewhere. But hopefully I can get the season going from this point on."
Taylor hinted three weeks ago he also thought Reich's future looked destined to be away from Selhurst Park. But the Palace boss has been impressed with the way Reich has responded to his exclusion from the first team.
"He has trained exceptionally well over the last week and he has deserved his chance," said Taylor.
"Not only has he trained well, but he has been the best player in the reserves in the games against Southampton and QPR. He earned that chance and I'm sure he'll get another one this weekend."
A place in Saturday's line-up against in Plymouth Argyle is now what the German has his eyes on.
Reich admits he needs more games to really show his boss what he is capable of. But this time he hopes he will be under less pressure.
"I am still not there, physically, where i could be," Reich added.
"I was really nervous before the game because it was a big chance for me. It could have been my last game for Palace because if i didn't perform the manager might not select me anymore.
"I thought I did alright and showed the manager I can play a part in this team. Hopefully he will see the situation like me."
