Friends of Sutton’s "indomitable" woman have paid tribute to her life.

Jean Wright, died aged 85 after months of suffering from Motor Neurone Disease at Kingswood Nursing Home on Tuesday, 24 July.

She lived in Sutton all her life and was well known supporter and instigator of campaigns to improve the area.

Miss Wright was a litter champion who badgered council officers, head teachers, and councillors to take the problem seriously.

In her retirement she threw herself into community life and her knowledge and interest in the local area was immense - perhaps sparked by an early experience of a flight over Sutton with Alan Cobham, the famous early aviation pioneer.

She worked as an administrator at St Thomas’ Hospital and Wimbledon High School and was a PA to the Chief Executive at the Girls Day School Trust.

Miss Wright had no known family but a close friend of hers said: "It’s often an inappropriate and tired description to use but I sincerely believe it to be true, Jean was very much a 'one-off', I cannot remember anyone quite like her - she was truly unique and we feel privileged to have had her cross our paths."

She was active in organisations such as Sutton Seniors Forum, Sutton and Cheam Society and was a governor at Devonshire Primary School. She was a supporter of the local Liberal Democrat party whilst retaining her independent views on every issue.

Paul Burstow MP said: "I will always have fond memories of Jean for her prodigious note taking at all the meetings she attended. She took a very keen interest in public affairs and I for one admired her steadfast support of the Liberal cause."

Miss Wright was cremated on Friday, August 3, at North East Surrey Crematorium.
