Team GB’s high-flying women’s team were knocked out of the Olympics as they lost 2-0 to Canada at the Coventry Stadium.
Hope Powell's side had dramatically raised expectations after winning their three group games with no goals conceded in a great advert for the women’s game.
Despite lighting up the women’s tournament in the group stage, Team GB were unable to replicate their previous performances against Canada who went ahead after 12 minutes when Jonelle Filino became the first wonan to score against Team GB in the tournament with a pinpoint strike from 15 yards. Canada doubled their lead 15 minutes later as Christine Sinclair struck with a majestic free-kick (pictured above) to silence the partisan crowd.
Team GB searched for a breakthrough and their best chance of the night fell to Jill Scott whose header lacked power. Powell’s side were second best and, for a campaign which promised so much, made what felt like a premature exit from the competition as they were convincingly beaten by the Canadians. In the group stages Team GB looked so assured but last night was win or bust and they came up short.
Jill Scott, 25, from Sunderland, said: "I am obviously disappointed (with the result against Canada). It has been the best journey of my life. It has been fantastic.
"Unfortunately it was not meant to be. I have loved every moment. I will look back in years to come at what has been a very special time in my life.
"Canada had a game plan and it worked so they stuck to it. We gave our all to get a goal back to give ourselves a chance The support has been brilliant. In all four games we have played, the crowd has been fantastic.
"I hope they have liked what they see and will continue to support women's football."
