British duo Conrad Williams and Martyn Rooney both progressed to tomorrow’s semi finals following their 400m heats in the Olympic Stadium this morning.

With the top three from each of the seven heats all advancing automatically, Williams crossed the line third while Rooney ran a quicker time to take second in the following heat.

Bromley’s Williams stopped the clock in 46.12 in heat six, finishing behind Australia’s Steven Solomon and Lalonde Gordon of Trindad & Tobago.

It could have been a different race for Williams as he was drawn against defending Olympic champion Lashawn Merritt but the American pulled up with an injury having struggled from the start.

Rooney – from Croydon – went round in 45.36 with only Belgium’s Kevin Borlee finishing ahead, meaning the British pair will join team-mate Nigel Levine, who also progressed, in tomorrow’s semi finals.

The star of the heats however, was South African Oscar Pistorius who also made it through to the next round after becoming the first double amputee to compete at the Olympic Games.

Speaking after his heat, Williams said he is feeling good for tomorrow and joined the growing list of athletes to heap praise on the home support.

He explained: “I feel good. I am just going to have to warm down now, learn from my race and make sure I have got a good game for tomorrow because there are going to be fireworks.”

And on the crowd, he added: “I can’t fault it – ten out of ten to be honest. The crowd is great. They have come down and they are supporting every athlete.

“As long as they are on the track and wearing GB colours the crowd are going to go crazy which is good for us.”
