Wandsworth could become Britain's beach volleyball capital after securing the sand from the Olympic tournament at Horseguards Parade.

Volleyball England, the sport's governing body, has backed a deal between the council and Locog to transport the sand to Barn Elms once the tournament is over.

The 682 square metres of sand will then be used to create four international standard beach volleyball courts at the 52-acre riverside sporting venue, which lies behind Putney Common.

The Brighter Borough is already home to the Men’s National League Champions, The Malory Eagles.

It is also a centre of excellence for junior volleyball, having won both the boys’ and girls’ London Youth Games trophies on several occasions over the last five years.

The installation of the courts and delivery of the sand will cost £45,000 but the entire amount has been met by a full grant from Volleyball England following a successful bid to Sport England.

The courts will be able to be converted into two international standard courts which can be used to stage matches involving the British national team.

When volleyball is not being played the courts will also be available for other sports events like beach soccer, tag rugby, beach ultimate frisbee and footvolley. Wandsworth beat off competition from a number of other London boroughs to secure this legacy.

Earlier this year locals fought a successful battle to stop the popular open space becoming a shaft for the Thames Tunnel.
