Junior athletes from Croydon Harriers played their part in the Olympics this week with one lucky enough to get his picture taken with golden girl Jessica Ennis.

Eleven athletes from the club were asked to be kit carriers at the games, the team had to fight off hundreds of applicants from across the UK to land the role.

The group got to witness British athletics history as they helped out on Super Saturday where Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford all secured gold medals for team GB in front of more than 80,000 spectators.

They also carried kit for the women’s 100m semi-final and final.

Dom Nolan, 17, a long distance runner for the team, managed to get his picture taken with Jessica Ennis after she collected her medal.

He said: “I actually had a ticket for last Saturday so I was in the stands watching it all with my parents.

“After it had finished I knew I had to get down there and try and find Jess or Mo Farah. So I ran down to find them.

“I managed to get down there and I saw Jess and just screamed her name, ran over to her and managed to get a photo with her. She was happy to have one taken. I saw Mo as well but he was getting his photo taken.

He said: “It was an amazing experience doing the kit carrying. I kit carried for Christine Ohuruogu and being so close to the action was great.

“It was unbelievable and the cheer from the crowd when a GB athlete was competing it was so loud.”
