Carshalton College has raised over £2,000 for various charities in the past academic year. Students and staff from all courses and departments have been involved in a variety of activities to donate money to national charities.
The College hosted a MacMillan coffee morning in November at the in-house training restaurant Nightingales. Students, staff & local residents came to the morning and enjoyed some tea, coffee, cakes and brownies prepared by the hospitality and catering students. The Student Support Centre team also raised money at the event by holding a raffle with a number of fruit hampers, the chance to win a holiday and a cuddly toy.
November was a busy month for fundraising with the College joining the nation in raising money for Children In Need with cupcake sales, face painting, cleaning & fancy dress. The College also participated in the Poppy Appeal in November. In addition, three catering and hospitality students raised £800 for St Raphael’s Hospice at their Christmas fair by selling their homemade cakes.
Valentine’s Day was celebrated at the College and students from the Students Union organised activities including: a Mr & Mrs competition, cupid arrow game, valentine message board, match the celebrity couples, design a t-shirty, raffles and tombolas. All proceeds from the raffle were donated to Terrence Higgins Trust.
Business studies students organised a Paralympic Awareness Day on 29th March 2012. The free event was to raise awareness of the Paralympic Festival which took place in June. The Business students used the event as an opportunity to raise money for local charity, The Diamond Riding Centre by selling cupcakes and offering nail paining.
Hairdressing students hosted their annual hairdressing competition on Monday 27 February 2012. The show, titled Fantasy, saw students create looks using the media, magazines, videos, movies and music for ideas. Over 180 visitors came to see the spectacular styles at the show held in the Pulse Sports Hall. The money raised from the show was donated to Cancer Research.
In May 2012, the whole College joined in the country’s celebrations in the build up to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games before the end of term. The celebrations included a variety of games and activities with staff and student union members in fancy dress. Competitions and raffles including a British quiz, tombola, tin can alley and the chance to have your picture taken with a life size cardboard cut-out of the Queen took place plus a flower stall with baskets produced by the students.
