An important document about the future of Sutton has been launched by the council, but how many people know about it?
It goes by the catchy title Core Planning Strategy: Policy Issues and Options. Pay attention - it could affect you because the main thrust of it is about building more flats in and around Sutton and Wallington.
The paper presents the public with three options from which to choose. All require an increase in housing density to meet the Mayor of London's target of 345 new homes in Sutton per year for the next nine years. All involve building tower blocks, cunningly described as "landmark buildings".
Option one is environmental protection. This is supposedly the least aggressive of the three, yet speaks of allowing higher residential densities within Sutton town centre and other sustainable locations unspecified. In other words more or less anywhere.
It also advocates increasing densities within established residential areas, presumably planning-speak for back garden development.
Options two and three provide for even more development, including within and around Wallington town centre. The document can be read in libraries or on the council's website.
More housing in Sutton makes no sense. We face shortages of water and energy, our roads are getting busier and air quality in Sutton is declining.
The way to send a clear message to the council is to say no to all three options. We have until November 3 to do so.
Just write a short letter to Strategic Planning Section, Sutton Council, 24 Denmark Road, Carshalton SM5 2JG.
