Staines Town are hoping their three new backmen will help them return to winning form at home to Carshalton Athletic in the Ryman Premier Division on Saturday (3pm).
But Marien Ifura - returning after a spell out of the game since the end of last season, and debutants Darius Charles and Peter Smith failed to prevent Staines losing 1-0 to visitors Folkestone Invicta in the FA Trophy first qualifying round last Saturday.
Manager Steve Cordery said: "It takes time for players to settle in. The thing with defenders is they know their jobs, so hopefully we can bounce back this week."
Charles, on loan from Brentford, and Smith, the former Canvey Island, Chelmsford City and Woking player who made 150 appearances for Brighton, have been snapped up following the departure of Pete Castle to Eastleigh and Adam Thompson's foot injury.
Gareth Risbridger returned to a much-changed Staines line-up after a short loan at Bracknell, but Folkestone triumphed with the help of two former Staines players in Ellis Remy and Samuel Kola Okikiolu.
In the crowd were two septuagenarian ex-Staines players from the 1940s - George Aspinall, who went on to play for Wigan Athletic, and Ron McBridge, 77.
Staines should have scored after 36 minutes when keeper Tony Kessell could not hold Andr Scarlett's cross, but Risbridger's effort was cleared off the lined.
Invicta took full advantage by scoring what proved the decisive goal in the 42nd minute. Kevin Watson's free-kick found skipper Adam Flanagan, who headed powerfully past Allaway.
