The Police, with only one league win this season, should have secured the three points in the first half but for numerous missed opportunities.
Dave Newman, Rob Haworth and then Simon Gregory for the Police in the opening 15 minutes all headed wide from less than 10 yards out.
Ben Abbey having done all the hard work with a long run then chose to drive the ball wide of the far post from 15 yards out.
The visitors failed to have one shot at the Police goal during the opening 45 minutes.
The 2nd half found Burgess Hill Town finally come alive and make a few attacking moves.
Dan Turner and then Ashley Jarvis both with 25 yard free kicks missed the target by inches.
Arron Slennings strode into the Police area and side stepped two defenders only to see his shot saved by the trailing leg of Police keeper Will Packham.
The final 15 minutes however belonged to the Police as they attacked the Burgess Hill Town goal for the deserved winner.
One man, however, stood in their way - Andre Foster, the visitors' massive goal keeper.
He saved a Criag Brown 25-yard shot with one hand. Minutes later, Haworth's 15-yard volley was plucked out of the air by Foster and, with the game into stoppage time, Kevin Cooper swivelled only to see his 22-yard drive pushed around the far post by a diving Foster yet again.
Another vital two points dropped by the Police.
