The historic Allders department store closed its doors for the last time on Sunday, ending a 150-year period trading in the town.

About 800 people have either lost their jobs or been relocated through the closure, which was first announced earlier this month after a period of three months in administration.

However, ten businesses operating around the mall have been able to remain, saving 40 jobs, following negotiation between landlords Minerva and Croydon Council.

The mall will remain a walk-through between North End and George Street, and the council has vowed to ensure the Allders shop fronts are maintained while the future of The Whitgift Centre remains uncertain.

Cabinet member for communities and economic development, Vidhi Mohan, said: “This is an excellent outcome for the traders because they haven’t had to relocate, and it’s good for customers and the surrounding businesses. “Our negotiations with Minerva will continue to ensure that the Allders mall is kept open and well maintained, and that the shop fronts are looked after as an attractive feature.”

Meanwhile, the employment advice service co-ordinated by the council for Allders staff and concession employees gave direct help to around 150 people in just a fortnight, providing links to vacancies at stores in the town centre.
