Journalism is often a stressful job but this week six journalists are about to take it to the max when they attempt to walk over a bed of red hot embers to raise money to care for the dying.

The staff, who all work in the newsroom at your local Guardian newspapers are doing the event to raise money for St Raphael’s Hospice in North Cheam on Tuesday, October 9.

Participants will face the ultimate test of mind over matter as they walk barefoot over red hot embers burning at around 1200 F.

The team which includes the group editor, two assistant editors, the chief sub editor and two reporters are taking part as part of a year-long fundraising campaign they are running for the hospice called Give Your Quid.

They are hoping with your help to raise £1,500 from the event and have set up a justgiving page to make it easy for anyone to donate. Visit www.justgiving.com/guardianfirewalk to donate, or text 70070 with the keyword FIRE71 followed by either £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10

Sean Duggan, group editor, said: "With a day to go the nerves are beginning to show. I can almost feel the heat on the soles of my feet and am seriously considering ways to toughen them up.

“We are really hoping that everyone who supports the hospice movement will use this opportunity to make a donation to their work which helps so many people coming to the end of their lives, as well as enjoying the thought of a few journalists getting roasted!

“We will be putting up photographs and a video on this website on Wednesday so everyone can have a laugh at our expense.”
