Matt Munro Junior wants to make it clear there is more to him than just being the son of a legendary crooner.

The 42-year-old has just embarked on a 21-date British tour, where he will be performing some of his father's classics and chatting about memories from the past.

But he is keen to point out the show is not a tribute act to his late father. He will be perfoming songs in his own style and also bringing some of his own numbers to the fore.

"Dad was a crooner, but I'm very much a jazz and swing man," said Matt.

"I wanted to use that in my show. It's not a tribute to my dad, it's the love for the man I call my dad. I think about him and I express that in my own songs."

Matt was just 21-years-old when his father died after a short illness in 1984.

Munro senior was one of Britain's early crooners and perfomed with the likes of Quincy Jones as he took both the UK and America by storm.

Matt sang with his father once on stage which made him want to become a singer. A year after his father's death, a tribute was organised at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London where Matt performed to over 2000 people.

Radio 2 DJ David Jacobs was in attendance and spotted Munro Junior's talents. Jacobs subsequently went on the radio and announced a new singer has emerged.

This led Munro Junior to appear on Opportunity Knocks in 1986 which established him as having his own individual talent.

He did three years on the circuit and earned his dues as a singer while keeping his father's name alive.

But it wasn't until last year in the 20th anniversary tour to mark two decades since his father's death that Munro Junior really launched himself in this country.

The tour was a huge success and brought his father's and his music to a new gerneration. He had turned down earlier requests to a tribute tour, but he thought after 20 years it was the right time.

"I was asked to do the tour before and turned it down. I didn't think I could do it justice," said Matt.

"But the 20th year was last year and I thought it was the right time to do it. It has been popular because otherwise why are people coming back?

"At least it showed I wasn't living off my father's name as I waited 20 years to do it."

in 1995 Matt recorded a duet album Matt Sings Monro which features his voice on his father's songs. It has sold over 200,000 copies, but more importantly for Matt it fulfilled one of his dreams.

"It was unbelievable," Matt added. "It was something I always wanted to do and it just shows what modern technology can do.

"We just took my dad's voice out on particular parts of songs and added mine. It was so special to do it and meant such a lot to me."
