A man who bought fake £50 notes told police he was going to use them as a prop in a music video, Croydon Crown Court heard.
But Daniel Williamson was still jailed for five months after admitting possession of counterfeit currency.
The court was told Williamson, of Norbury Cross, had notes with a face value of £3,200. He told police he bought them in Camden market for £130.
Hamish Reid, prosecuting, said: "The notes did not have a silver strip and were made on thick paper.
"He said he was going to use them as a prop in a musical video he was going to produce - with flashy girls and money being splashed around."
The court heard the 26-year-old had several previous convictions, including one for robbery.
Judge Charles Atkins told him: "You knew that this money was counterfeit but I accept the reason you had it was to use it to assist in making a DVD to give the impression of being well off and successful.
"But by buying that currency you encouraged its circulation, so there is a serious aspect to this offence. Perhaps you don't fully realise it."
Williamson was sentenced to a further month behind bars for failing to appear at an earlier court hearing.
