The secret to a long marriage is to always kiss and make up, according to one Croydon couple who have just celebrated 60 years of marriage.

Stephen and Daphne Thurlow received a telegram from the Queen in recognition of their diamond anniversary - which they celebrated in style by drinking champagne until late into the evening.

The couple met in Egham in 1945 while Stephen, now 84, was serving with the army in Burma.

He said: "My friend and I went over to Egham and walked into a pub and there were two land army girls sitting in the corner.

"We liked the look of them, eventually I went to talk to Daphne and that's where it all started."

Stephen - a former Croydon Champions award winner - married Daphne, now 81, in 1946.

They have three children and have lived in Croydon all their married life. Stephen added: "We have had a very good life together, if we ever have a tiff we talk it over and kiss and make up - that is the secret to 60 years of marriage."
