School children puzzled over fractional questions about Einstein and cake in the first ever Royal Russell School Junior Maths Olympiad last week.
Six schools took part in the competition and children were able to show off their skills by solving maths and logic puzzles.
The teams were then treated to a magic Maths show by author Rob Eastaway who awarded prizes with headmaster Dr John Jennings.
Each child took home a hardback signed edition of Rob Eastaway’s book How Many Socks Make a Pair.
Joint runners up were Elmhurst School and Royal Russell Junior School who both received commemorative medals.
The winning team was The Roche School, only one point ahead of them, who received an engraved cup.
Now test yourselves with the sample questions below...
Question 1: What number comes next in the sequence: 2, 2, 4, 6, 10, 16, 26, …
Question 2: I was given a 1500-piece jigsaw of Albert Einstein. Half the pieces are missing and half the rest are damaged. How many good pieces are there?
Question 3: Afsal eats half his cake. He then gives ¼ of what is left to a friend. What fraction of the original cake is left?
