Gypsies have formed an intrinsic part of the history of Norwood Park, and the tradition will be recognised during centenary celebrations this weekend.
Tales of travellers and gypsies in Norwood have been traced back to the 17th century, including the legendary Queen of the Gypsies Margaret Finch who drew visitors such as Samuel Pepys and Dr Johnson to her conical hut on the park site.
To celebrate this link centenary organisers have invited the Clearwater Gypsies, who represent the gypsy and traveller community, to bringing an amazing display of traditional gypsy wares.
Accompanying the fair will be live music, a tea dance, belly dancing, jugglers on stilts, children’s entertainers, a traditional fete with sideshows and a BBQ.
In addition there will an archery lessons, basketball and football coaching from Chelsea FC.
The event is organised by The Friends of Norwood Park who have joint funded it with Lambeth Community Fund and the Norwood Forum, and takes places between 12pm and 4pm.
The Park is located off Salter’s Hill, West Norwood, SE19 1AR For more information visit www.friendsofnorwoodpark.co.uk or email friendsofnorwoodpark@gmail.com.
