Former school pupils who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars have been honoured in a new memorial.
The plaque, unveiled on Thursday at the South Wimbledon Community Association, marks the efforts of those who studied at the Haydon Road Boys School.
During the First World War alone, 174 of the school’s former pupils were killed.
The campaign for a new memorial was led by Ron Blackman, 85, a local resident who studied at the school - the site of which would become the home of the community association - in the 1930s.
He said: “I’m overwhelmed by the number of people who came down today. I wasn’t expecting all this fuss but this plaque has been a long time coming.”
The ceremony was attended by war veterans and school children from All Saints primary school.
They were joined by the Mayor of Merton and representatives from the armed services, police, fire, and London Underground.
