Hundreds of pupils from a Streatham school took to the streets last Wednesday to send the message to drivers to kill their speed - and hoped to break a world record at the same time.

Some 500 pupils, parents and teachers from St Andrew’s Roman Catholic primary school in Polworth Road walked around the streets close to their school, chanting and waving banners, demanding motorists slow down when passing schools.

They were among tens of thousands of pupils nationwide who made similar protests, and were hoping to smash the record for the largest “walking bus” - a scheme by which children walk to school in groups to be healthier and greener.

One of the school’s pupil road safety officers, Alice Maloney, nine, said: “People slowing down around schools can save lives, and if people walk more its better for the environment.”
