A new sports pavilion to be used by a school and local community groups was opened by a paralympic athlete.

The Sports Pavilion built at Foresters Primary School, in Wallington, and opened by paralympian David Weir was part funded by a £167,000 grant awarded by the Football Foundation, the UK’s largest sports charity.

Now the school and Surrey County FA would like to attract groups with an interest in disability football and the local community in general.

Havard Spring, headteacher at Foresters Primary School, said: “This is a very exciting project for Foresters Primary School. Not only have we got an amazing sports pavilion but we have the opportunity, through football, to support children with disabilities from within the local community.

“We are delighted that David Weir Paralympian was available to cut the ribbon. As an accomplished athlete his presence will be an inspiration to our children as to what can be achieved through determination and hard work.

“None of this would be possible without the generous support given to us from the Football Foundation. We would also like to thank The London Marathon, Garfield Western Foundation and the London Borough of Sutton who have also contributed to the costs of the pavilion.”

Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation said: “This new changing pavilion is excellent news for the local community. It provides a much-needed quality space for sports which will benefit both the pupils at Foresters Primary School and local people.”

The Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities throughout the country. Funded by the Premier League, The Football Association and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity with a £40m budget going straight into the heart of football.
