The illustrations of a local student appeared in a BBC Radio One video of a poetry reading by britpop star Jarvis Cocker.

Kingston College student Catherine Wiltshire, 17, from North Cheam, created a character for the animation to accompany ex-Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker's reading of London, by William Blake.

The video, which featured on the radio’s website and had Miss Wiltshire’s illustration as its ‘front cover’, was the result of a one-day animation workshop at 21CC, the BBC’s digital learning centre in White City, attended by first year students of the National Diploma in Graphic Design.

Miss Wiltshire said: “I have enjoyed all the workshops at the BBC this year.

"For this one I enjoyed designing the characters. I was surprised but delighted that it's my image that is seen when you first open the Radio One page.

“We made a picture to go with the reading then animated it. I’m proud of it, but other students did it as well so I think it was good team work.”

The animated clip was recorded as the Book at Bedtime for Rob Da Bank's BBC Radio 1 show and Poetry Season.

At the workshop, created to complement the National Diploma studies, students could watch their artwork come to life by mastering simple animation techniques. The latest software allowed them to grab frames using a DV camera to create stop motion animation, while learning how to add special effects to them.

The reading’s video is currently available at the Radio One website at www.bbc.co.uk/poetryseason/poets/william_blake.shtml and has received rave reviews.
