Wilson’s School in Wallington hosted the launch event for a nation-wide initiative to encourage pupils to play chess.
The scheme is aiming to promote chess clubs in schools by putting 10 free chess sets into every one of England’s 250,000 schools.
The scheme is sponsored by Holloid Plastics, which is manufacturing and distributing the free chess sets in partnership with the English Chess Federation.
The event on Saturday, June 27, involved 10 other schools, who attended to enjoy the event and pick up their free chess sets.
As well as a speech, snacks and drinks, the event included a mini chess tournament, where a keen chess player from Wilson’s School, Anand Krishnan, took on several younger players in simultaneous chess games.
