The lives of refugee children who found safety in Carshalton was retold in an exhibition by students.
Their Past, Your Future exhibition looked at the stories of Basque refugees that fled from Franco during the Spanish Civil War and took refuge at the Oaks in Carshalton.
Overton Grange School pupils researched the topic in collaboration with Sutton library’s Kath Shawrcross and Jane Allen.
Assistant headteacher Beth Pressley said the event was a “real success”.
She said: “The daughter of one of the refugees also helped the students re-tell the history of this important aspect of Sutton and Carshalton’s history.
“The exhibition also looked at the issue of being a refugee in 2009 to give it a modern angle.”
The exhibition went on on display at the Europa Gallery and was attended by MP Paul Burstow.
Their Past, Your Future is a lottery funded project run in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum.
It encourages communities to research the impact of a 20th Century conflict on their history.
