Surrey County Council will spend £500,000 helping under 19s stay in full time education by subsidising their travel costs.

Thousands of students across Surrey will continue to get cheaper rail tickets thanks to the County Council’s investment for the coming academic year.

Student rail cards are for those aged under-19 attending a full-time course in Surrey who also live in the county.

Nearly 80 per cent of the money will go towards helping students get half-price travel between home and classes.

Students pay just £10 for a student fare card that allows half-price travel from between a minimum of seven days and a maximum of year.

The cards include a passport-style photo and are issued to students through schools and colleges to prevent fraud.

The college or school students attend can be based outside Surrey as long as they live in the county and are in full-time education.

The scheme, run with South West Trains, has been operating for more than a decade and the council has agreed to extend it for 2009-10.

Cards and tickets are valid for use with other train companies, with South West Trains acting as the coordinator for other transport firms.

The council will also provide tickets for children attending school who are entitled to free train travel.
