A 25-year-old Surbiton school teacher is swapping teaching kids to brave the depths of the Amazon on a charity run.
Joseph Gale, who teaches at Hollyfield School and lives in West Molesey, heads out to the jungle next month to begin a 200km foot race.
He will be faced with temperatures of 35C, crushing humidity levels and a bevy of beastly creepy crawlies.
The challenge, aptly named the Jungle Marathon, requires participants to carry everything they need for the seven days of the race.
Mr Gale, who has never done anything like this before, decided to give it a go in memory of his Aunt and the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, which cared for her in her final days.
He said: “When I saw the work they do at the hospice I really wanted to do something to repay them. They made it possible for my family to say goodbye in such a nice setting, they clearly care so much for the people that come into the hospice and remain friendly and cheery when there is a lot of sadness around.”
Mr Gale wants to raise more than £3,500 but is relying heavily on donations.
