A free advice helpline has been set up to help new university students cope with the strains of living on a tight budget.

With hundreds of young people across Merton heading to university this month, the Government’s Legal Services Commission (LSC) is keen to promote its community legal advice helpline.

The service, funded by Legal Aid, provides independent advice to students struggling with problems including debt, housing and education, as well as family and welfare benefits.

John Sirodcar, the LSC’s national relationship director, said: "University life can be very expensive, due to the costs of accommodation, books, computers and other equipment.

“Students' financial problems, if ignored, can easily escalate into issues with housing or with their university courses."

The helpline is available on 0845 3454 345.
