Former BBC television weather girl Helen Young dropped in to a breakfast reception at Cheam Park Farm infants school on Wednesday to talk to children about the health and environmental benefits of walking.
The event took place as part of national travel campaign, the Big Wow (Walk Once a Week) which encourages pupils and parents to leave their cars at home and walk to school. English nature was the theme of this year’s event, backed by the council’s Smarter Travel Sutton team, and youngsters from 10 borough schools took part in field trips to local nature sites.
Cheam Park Farm Infants was one of three schools in Sutton to receive an outstanding accreditation for its travel plan encouraging staff, children and parents to use greener forms of transport.
Headteacher Alison Day said: “Our travel plan success is due to a combination of car free days, participating in Wow and the introduction of a bike club for year 2 children.”
