The hundredth birthday party of a former Raynes Park High School teacher saw friends, family, and even former pupils from more than half a century ago celebrate in Wimbledon last week.
Edward Hanson, who turned 100 on November 22, taught at the school soon after it was founded in 1936, and last week shared memories of his 20 years teaching there with three former students.
His two children, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren were also at the tea party in Denmark Avenue. The physics teacher was even sent a card from the Queen to mark the occasion.
Daughter Gillian Quenzer, 71, said: “It’s great that some of his pupils have kept in touch all this time and we were delighted that they could come.
“Particularly during the war, teaching was a vital occupation and for so many students whose fathers were away he played an important part in their lives.”
Edward, who has lived in Denmark Avenue for more than 70 years, was also joined by neighbours at the party.
Since retiring from teaching at 65, he developed a reputation as an expert in fixing clocks while continuing to write school text books.
