Plans for William Morris primary to be taken over by the Harris Academy have sparked concern and dismay within the staff room and among governors of the Mitcham school.

The idea, currently under discussion, was only revealed to teachers at the school after last week’s report in the Wimbledon Guardian, based on information released by Merton Council.

Only the headteacher was told a day earlier but it is thought discussions between Lord Harris, Mitcham’s MP Siobhain McDonagh, and Merton’s LEA about the potential move have taken place behind closed doors.

One member of staff who did not wish to be named, said: “This is the first we’ve heard of it. Everyone wants to paint William Morris as a bad school but becoming an academy could completely change the ethos and way in which our children are taught.”

Labour Councillor Maxi Martin, Merton’s shadow education spokeswoman, said: “This has been handled in a shabby way - no one really knows how far discussions have gone.”

But Ms McDonagh MP said she supported the plans given the dramatically improved results since Tamworth Manor High School became the Harris Academy in 2006.

She said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the young people of Pollards Hill. It might be controversial but that doesn’t mean it isn’t right.”

Merton Council’s cabinet member for children's services, Councillor Debbie Shears, said: "We appreciate that these discussions might be unsettling for some staff and governors but we have an overriding responsibility to put the needs of our young people first and try and secure them the best opportunities for now and the future.

“At this stage we are just looking to hear what people think to ensure the most appropriate decision is made."
