A Namibian school choir gave a concert at the ACS school in Cobham to celebrate 20 years of Namibian independence.

The school in Portsmouth Road welcomed more than 15 students from Dr Alpo Mauno Mbamba Junior Secondary School on Tuesday, March 19, and the performance was attended by the Namibian High Commissioner.

In the past 10 years, ACS students and staff have taken part in volunteer and fundraising work on behalf of Namibian schools.

Ann Brandse, head of boarding at ACS Cobham, said: “At ACS Cobham we were delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate Namibian Independence with the Namibian school choir.

"Proceeds from the event will go towards the Namibian school choir and the Namibia 2010 expedition, which departs in June.”

Earlier in the week students had put on their own theatrical extravaganza.

Circus Olympus, which was performed to peers, parents and staff on March 17 and 18, included dance, acrobatics, voice music and physical theatre.

Almost 50 students, aged between 10 and 13, took part in the production. The script was written by Lindsay Price of Theatre Folk, a Canadian company which writes original play scripts for schools around the world.

Amanda-Leigh Damms, drama teacher at ACS Cobham, said: “Circus Olympus has really stimulated the students’ imaginations; they have embraced the material created for them as well as incorporating their own material and suggestions.”
