The skateboard replaced the blackboard at one school to give pupils the chance to unwind from end-of-year exam pressure.

Wallington County Grammar School set up the programme of extra classes, events and student groups in a bid to boost concentration, give students a break from academia, and break down barriers between students and teachers, as well as helping to improve self-esteem and motivation.

Other sports will soon be included in the scheme, with plans in place for basketball and table tennis sessions, and new playground equipment to help students unwind during break and lunch time.

Teachers hope extra sports classes and activities will give students the chance to pick up new hobbies and see the school in a more positive light.

Councillor Kirsty Jerome, education spokeswoman for Sutton Council, said: “Studying can be incredibly stressful, so helping students to cope with pressure is a very valuable thing for a school to do.”
