A new exhibition is showing off the best artwork and creative writing by students from Sutton’s secondary schools.

Entries to a competition exploring the ‘Black British history makers of today’ will be on display on level two in Sutton Central Library until November 30.

Athlete Darren Campbell inspired the winner of 11-13 category Brooke Sara Clarke, 12, and 14-16 winner Jehan Al-Safar, 14, focused on Naomi Campbell.

Ayobami Akin Agunbiade,13, was commended for his research an insight into the issue of race in the media during August’s riots.

Winner Brooke Sara Clarke said: “I choose Darren Campbell because he has done a lot of work in the local area working with young children encouraging them to pursue their dreams and ambitions. I thought this was a great way that he gave back to our local community.”

Winners were announced by Mayor Gerry Jerome at the finale of Black History Month 2011, which also saw food tasting, live music and African drumming and dancing. The prizes include a trip to the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool.

Councillor Simon Wales, executive member for communities, transport and voluntary sector at Sutton Council, said: “This year’s Black History Month has been even bigger and better than last year’s and people of all communities have taken part.

"Events throughout the month have explored African Caribbean culture in a whole host of interesting new ways, and it’s particularly good to see Sutton’s young people getting involved and celebrating our diverse society."
