Students have held a community enterprise apple day at a school orchard they designed and planted.

The plantation at the front of Richard Challoner School, New Malden, is designed to last at least 50 years, providing a link with the cultural heritage of fruit-growing in the area.

Year 11 students laid on games and activities for primary school students invited on Friday, November 18, including making fresh apple juice, a human fruit machine and a raffle for an Apple iPod shuffle.

ICT teacher Toni Rochowski said: “Students will be able to focus on the importance of the variety of life on earth to their lives, in particular the food they eat.

“They have developed designs of the school orchard, conducted research, participated in a field trip to a local orchard, and will consider fruit consumption.

“Learning about biodiversity can be shared with parents and members of the school community through experiences based on these themes thus promoting the values of being socially responsible.”
