Sutton is the brainiest borough in London, according to latest figures released by the Department for Education (DfE).

One in four children from Sutton’s state schools who apply for university go on to gain a place at a Russell Group Institution which is composed of the UK’s top 20 universities.

Three per cent achieve places at Oxford and Cambridge and 23 per cent go on to other elite colleges.

The London Borough of Brent gained the second best results with two per cent going to Oxbridge.

Across the country, only Reading beat Sutton’s results.

Councillor Dave Callaghan, chair of Sutton Council’s children, family and education committee, said: “Sutton’s schools are well known for being among the best in the country and these new figures highlight what an excellent education the borough provides.

“Gaining a place at a Russell Group University is a real achievement and topping the table is testament to Sutton students’ ambition and hard work.”
