Murals celebrating Sutton’s links with its continental twin towns are to get a new lease of life.
Looking out from windows facing the High Street’s Cock and Bull pub, the brightly-coloured murals depict the borough alongside its four twin towns – Wilmersdorf and Minden in Germany, Gagny in France and Gladsaxe in Denmark.
The tapestries, created in 1993, depict each twin town with its heraldic shield above a painting of the town, showing some of its defining features.
Each has a different plant symbolising its environmental awareness.
Despite being passed by thousands of commuters and Sutton residents each day, most people have no idea what the murals are supposed to commemorate.
To tackle this, a new information board is being erected to tell their story.
Currently being designed and commissioned by Sutton Council, the noticeboard will be in place later this year.
Councillor Graham Tope, Sutton’s executive member for community safety, leisure and libraries, said: “These murals are an important part of our borough’s history and I think it is fitting people should be able to learn more about them.”
