An Asperger’s expert from Wandsworth has written a ground-breaking new book on how to live with the syndrome in response to the lack of services offered by the government.
Bill Goodyear, 60, of Rochelle Close, is the only full-time coach to people with Asperger’s in Britain and wrote his book, Coaching People With Asperger’s Syndrome, out of frustration, to help people cope after they are diagnosed.
He said: “Current approaches to Asperger’s don’t go far enough. There are virtually no services designed for people with Asperger’s and all too often they slip through the net.
“If you leave them long enough they become depressed and in some cases suicidal. This book gives practical guidance, and I hope inspiration, so that people with Asperger’s can get the help they need.”
Asperger’s is a form of autism people are born with.
The number of those being diagnosed has gone up by 200 per cent over the past few years. It never goes away and causes sufferers problems with communicating and social skills.
Less than 0.5 percent of public funding currently goes to research, prevention and treatment of Asperger’s, despite it being one of the fastest-growing disorders in the UK.
It took Bill three years to write the book which came out last month, and he encourages anyone who is concerned about Asperger’s to get in touch.
“I would say to anybody whose worried about Asperger’s that if in doubt give me a call. There’s no charge for a chat and you will find you are not alone,” he said.
Coaching People With Asperger’s Syndrome by Bill Goodyear is available now priced £20.99.
