Police have named the man who died after a crash in Merton on Saturday afternoon (May 29).
On Tuesday (June 1), the Metropolitan Police confirmed that 25-year-old Brazilian Marcos Mateus Alves died after the moped he was riding was involved in a crash with a car on St Helier Avenue, close to Netley Gardens in Morden on Saturday.
As the Wimbledon Times reported previously, police were called at 4.21pm Saturday to the scene of the crash with paramedics and London's Air Ambulance.
Despite their efforts, Mateus was pronounced dead at the scene at one minute past 5pm.
Two men, both drivers of cars thought to be involved in the crash, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and have been released under investigation.
"Detective Constable Chris May, of the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, urged people who may have been in the area and seen what happened to contact police as their investigation into the fatal collision continues.
"The collision happened at a very busy location and at a busy time of day," May said.
"I am sure there were a number of people who witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it.
"I would ask those people in the area or with dash cam footage to contact the police.
"Your information could be vital in helping us understand the cause of this tragic incident."
The Met Police statement added that detectives "believed that two cars were travelling at speed prior to one of them being in collision with the moped".
Anyone with information is asked to call the Met's Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8543 5157 or via 101 quoting reference Cad 5035/29May.
