New London Scottish coach Phil Greening knows from experience how much of a handful Bristol will be tomorrow at the Athletic Ground tomorrow, writes Andy Weston.
Bristol’s 12-match unbeaten league run came to an abrupt end last Sunday at Cornish Pirates, which allowed Worcester Warriors to claim top spot ahead of Andy Robinson’s side.
Saturday’s 29-18 win at BEdford Blues was Greening’s first game with the exiles after being officially unveiled as a new member of the coaching staff alongside fellow former Wasps hero Tim Payne.
The pair joined the club last Friday in the wake of head coach James Buckland’s exit that is expected to see the former London Welsh hooker pitch up at Premiership side London Irish next.
Bristol director of rugby Andy Robinson will have been reeling after conceding 45 points at the weekend and Greening is expecting Scottish – now firmly established in the Championship’s top four – to feel the backlash.
Greening said: “Robbo (Andy Robinson) is a great coach whose attention to detail is fantastic and with what happened last week I know he will have been absolutely fuming.
“To leak 45 points is huge for them and they will have been massively disappointed.
“They will come here all guns blazing and we need to be wary of that, but we are on a roll at the moment having picked up 15 points in our last three games.
“It will have been a tough week for Bristol and I’m hoping we can turn the screw and put more pressure on them by exerting our skill-set.
“It’s going to be my first home game at London Scottish so I’m looking forward to it.”
Meanwhile London Scottish winger Alec Coombes will make his Scotland U20s debut against France in Gueugnon tomorrow in the opening round of the U20 Six Nations Championship.
Coombes joined London Scottish last summer on an academy contract and made his first team debut against Pontypridd in December.
Coombes said: “I'm ecstatic to be involved in the squad for the first game and I am very excited to get my first cap.
“The atmosphere in camp is upbeat and everyone is looking forward to the game.
“I feel our squad has good depth and talent and I think we will be a very difficult challenge for any team.”
