Defender Tom Field has made anough of an impression in pre-season for Brentford head coach Dean Smith to warn any new arrivals they will not just walk into the left back spot.
The 19-year-old academy graduate played a full part in last week's 1-0 win over German side Vfl Bochum and Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers - which came by way of defender John Egan's first goal for the club.
Field has been given a run in the team following the departure of ex-skipper Jake Bidwell to QPR earlier in the summer.
And while Smith expects to sign a replacement he accepts the man in posession of the shirt is doing plenty to keep himself in the equation.
"It has been tough on Tom because he is the only left sided defender in the squad at the moment, which has meant he has played two full games in a week," said the coach.
"We are looking to address that, but he has done nothing wrong.
"He has shown he will be competition for anyone who comes in.
"Competition is what you want in a squad and we have certainly got that."
