Head coach Dean Smith will step up his search for wing men after finding square pegs Romaine Sawyers and Lewis MacLeod do not fit in round holes.
The midfield pair were pressed into action out wide during Saturday's opening day 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town in the absence of any natural wide men in Smith's squad.
The Griffin Park chief, who has last term's key playmaker Alan Judge out injured, has made no secret of his desire to strengthen resources on the flanks, but is finding the permanent and loan transfer market frustrating.
He had hoped to have one or two more fresh faces in his squad ahead of last weekend, but now seems resigned to the fact his requirements may not be satisfied until transfer deadline day.
MacLeod at least laid on Nic Yennaris' 77th minute strike in a spirited second half display from a young side, but nevertheless Smith admitted his men had been short of quality at the weekend.
"We never got close enough to Scottie [striker Scott Hogan] to support him for long periods," he said.
"We had Romaine Sawyers and Lewis Macleod who are not natural wide and won't go on the outside to beat their man, but they're intelligent footballers.
"We're a young team and we know we have work to do. But I was pleased with the spirit of the players.
"They kept going and Huddersfield had to keep it in the corner for the last five minutes to win it.
"We're looking to bring players in. We know we need to improve, certainly in wide areas. And add a bit of pace.
"There will be players in before the end of the window, that's for sure."
