This weekend’s home game against Shrewsbury Town has a familiar flavour to it.
Not so long ago was this a League Two fixture, and with both teams languishing in the bottom seven it’s likely to play out like one, too.
AFC Wimbledon are only one point ahead of Shrewsbury, who sit third from bottom, which makes the need for a win all the more important.
If results go our way we could find ourselves sitting pretty in mid-table with a comfortable gap between us and the relegation zone.
There is chatter on Wimbledon Common that last weekend’s second half performance against Charlton Athletic could be a watershed moment, much like away at Newport County last season.
Dominic Poleon is proving he is worth his salt and, significantly, Tyrone Barnett opened his Dons account in traditional Wimbledon style.
Of course, one can’t ignore the personnel changes at the other end of the pitch.
James Shea made a triumphant return between the sticks at The Valley, pulling off several saves that reminded us of why we used to love him as much as we did.
Shea was right to remain patient and stick with Wimbledon over the summer, and now Ryan Clarke has departed he will know he has been given the gift of a rare second chance.
He will grab it with both hands, and knowing that a poor run of form will likely spell the end, we should now see the best of him.
Finally we come to the elephant in the room. While it does not register with part of our fan base, the fact that we could go above Milton Keynes this weekend is one of the most significant moments since our rebirth.
All the hard work and all the promotions has led to this moment.
If on Saturday evening we are above them in the table, then what was the point of them of in the first place?
