It’s true that the league table doesn’t lie, but it’s also true that if results go our way we could, theoretically, be ninth come Saturday evening (that would of course require an 8-0 win on our part…).
AFC Wimbledon should have won at Coventry City, but we didn’t, so we move on.
Every match going forward will be treated as a “must win” but this weekend we simply must beat Gillingham.
The mid-table pack is phenomenally tight with no clear boundary to the relegation zone, we cannot afford to drop more points against equally middling teams.
The good news is that our strike force is finding its feet, and with Lyle Taylor having scored twice in two games it looks like he has his mojo back.
Dominic Poleon is proving to be the signing of the summer and has shown a level of skill we haven’t seen in a while.
The bad news is that we need our centre backs to find that missing spark.
Paul Robinson and Darius Charles have been missing the X Factor at times and it has cost us points.
The solution would be to bring in Chris Robertson.
Not to suggest that Robinson or Charles need replacing, but active competition for places can help bring out the best in a player.
Everyone needs to know that they are not indispensable, and we cannot afford to let in any more goals due to silly mistakes. James Shea needs their help.
The big story this week has of course been the news about Plough Lane.
For the best part of 25 years it felt like it was never going to happen, but now, at last, it is.
Let’s bring the roof down at the Cherry Red Records stadium this weekend to celebrate.
