AFC Wimbledon have eased into the third round of the FA Cup after overcoming a poor start against FC Halifax Town to record a comfortable win.
Ben Purrington’s first goal since 2014 sent them on their way before Anthony Wordsworth and Joe Pigott scored twice within minutes.
But what looked to be a sure-fire victory became tense when Niall Maher’s shot deflected off Rod McDonald and sailed in for an own goal.
Here’s how we rated Wimbledon’s players…
John McDonnell – 7 – Pulled off from strong stops when called upon, must’ve been relieved to see Matty Kosylo’s effort crack the post in the first half.
Deji Oshilaja – 8 – Kosylo, who was on his side, couldn’t get past him most of the afternoon. He was a rock.
Will Nightingale – 6 – He struggled for a bit during the first half, particularly coming unstuck when he was on the ball, though he made up for it.
Rod McDonald – 6 – Decent showing, couldn’t do much about Halifax’s consolation goal.
Ben Purrington – 7 – He was fortunate to see his effort come off a player to go in but it was still a decent strike.
Jake Jervis – 5 – Quiet game for him. He completely missed the ball for Purrington’s goal – whether by mistake or on purpose, one’s still not too sure. Replaced by James Hanson.
Anthony Wordsworth – 7 – Mixed first 45 minutes, better after the restart. Did really well for his goal in what was an excellent finish.
Anthony Hartigan – 6 – Got himself about on both ends, went into the referee’s book. Replaced by Scott Wagstaff.
Tom Soares – 6 – Overcame a nasty fall to play a part. Replaced by Trotter.
Mitch Pinnock – 6 – Had the bulk of Wimbledon’s chances on goal as they struggled to contain Halifax at times, maybe unlucky to not get on the scoresheet.
Joe Pigott – 8 – He had little to no service during the first 45 minutes before really coming into it late on. The striker really loved the third goal, as told in his celebration. Man of the match.
