Ollie Watkins - Not the centre forward we want him to be

Firstly, Watkins is a very, very, very talented footballer.

And dare I say he could play in the top division. But, to get the best out of the former Exeter man he needs to be playing in his favoured position.

That position is not as the centre forward.

Yes, Thomas Frank’s hands were somewhat tied with the timing of losing Neal Maupay in the summer, and they know Watkins has an eye for goal, but he is not a man to lead the line.

Playing alongside a more abrasive striker he would work well, looking to get in behind, joining in with the attack, but to be the focal point of the side negates from his strengths:- his pace, and trickery.

His decision making as a front man is still some way off, he is learning but if Brentford do harbour ambitions of making a run for promotion, is Watkins the man to lead them there? I have my doubts.

Pontus Jansson

He makes defending look effortless.

He reads the game so well it’s not very often he needs to make a tackle as he’s already picked off the through ball, or smothered an attackers run.

You can see the confidence running through the back-line when he’s there, Henrik Dalsgaard is one who’s upped his game and forged a good understanding with his Scandinavian teammate.

Last season Julian Jeanvier was described as ‘a beast’ by Thomas Frank, it’s safe to say the Bees now have two.

Thomas Frank’s Calmness

Post-match the Bees boss praised his side’s calmness in possession, not rushing a pass, or quickly trying to get themselves out of danger.

More methodical, logical, and confident on the ball they worked their way up the pitch.

Even in the dying moments when the crows were baying for the ball to get lumped forward, the players calmly passed their way up the field before scoring an unlikely winner.

That calmness comes from the boss, he won’t take the plaudits but I for one believe the glass of wine he said he’d be drinking post-match was well deserved.

Magical Griffin Park

The new stadium looks incredible, it will be incredible, but there’s a magic about Griffin Park.

It’s narrow seating, covered stands and the proximity to the pitch, you can’t help but feel you’re part of the action.

‘Anything is possible,’ when you’re at Griffin Park said Thomas Frank, and it is.

Let’s hope the new stadium a stone’s throw away can reproduce half the atmosphere on a game day that was at Griffin Park on Saturday.

Millwall Travelling Support

They may have a bad reputation but for 90minutes the Millwall fans were everything you wanted from travelling support.

Noisy, passionate and loyal.

Singing non-stop from the sold out two-tiers of Lions they brought with them across London, you felt that they were partly responsibly for Watkins’ penalty miss.

The roar they let out when it was cleared was deafening, and they don’t get the credit they deserve for contributing to such a good atmosphere at Griffin Park, especially when the Bees were 2-0 down and a number of fans had left the ground.
