Terry Brown has revealed that Paul Lorraine is likely to skipper the Dons this campaign - barring any season-ending injuries.

Centre-half Lorraine took the captain’s armband for Saturday’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to Wycombe Wanderers as Brown got to run the rule over his new-look Wimbledon side.

And he reckons the 25-year-old former Don, who returned to Kingsmeadow from Woking earlier this summer, fits the bill to step into the berth vacated by Jason Goodliffe.

Brown said: “I thought Paul had a good game on Saturday.

“I am certainly edging towards him being captain at the moment - he has all the qualities you require and is the ideal candidate among the players we have.

“He is a leader of men and will pull the rest of the players along with him.

“He has experience at this level and that will be vital for us.”

Matt Harrold returned to haunt the Dons at the weekend, the Wycombe striker scoring the only goal late on to add to his hat-trick in the FA Cup tie last November.

But despite the reverse, Brown insisted he was happy with the workout.

He added: “It was my first chance to see a lot of the guys in a Wimbledon shirt and I thought we did OK.

“There is a long way to go in regards to both fitness and an understanding of how I want them to play, but it was a decent start.

“As a first game it was a lot tougher than I would have liked, but it was a great opportunity for players to get a solid 45 minutes under their belts.”

The Dons boss fielded a handful of non-contracted players in the Kingsmeadow clash, including goalkeeper Sebb Brown and striker Kelvin Bossman, and hopes to do the same again when Wimbledon travel to the Isle of Man for a brace of friendlies this weekend.

Brown added: “The first couple of games is the perfect chance to take a look at some of these guys, but Saturday was such a tough game that it was difficult to get any answers.

“Wycombe are obviously a quality side and it is difficult to impress against them.

“But I am hoping things become a bit clearer this weekend - it was always our intention to get away and the Isle of Man will be a great opportunity to assess things.”
