Brentford winger Sam Saunders reckons he has plenty more in the tank, despite having displayed close to a full repertoire of his talents in last week’s friendly defeat to Ipswich Town.
The 25-year-old winger, signed from Dagenham & Redbridge in the summer, was one of the stars last Wednesday as he combined with fellow former Daggers Danny Foster and Ben Strevens on the right hand side.
The former Carshalton Athletic star delivered a number of telling balls in to the box on the night, which almost saw Strevens almost add to his opening strike for the Bees.
Boss Andy Scott was impressed with his side’s work at set-pieces with Saunders orchestrating matters to good effect, while at the same time seeing a couple of speculative efforts from deadball situations miss the target.
But the midfielder expects to be in peak condition come the opening day of the season at Carlisle United.
“It is early doors. They were the first strike I’ve had for a few months. Hopefully, I’ll get closer once I’ve got the rust off and improve in time for the first match,” he said.
“Ipswich wasn’t perfect by any means. I got a few balls into the box, but I can do better. We’ve just got to keep improving every game, so we are ready for Carlisle.
“We’re training hard every day, as hard as we can. We are going to give it 100 per cent and see where it takes us.”
The Dagenham trio, against the Tractor Boys in particular, demonstrated why Scott persuaded them all to switch to west London.
But Saunders reckons they have to put their success at Victoria Road behind them to concentrate on contributing to what could be another good season for the Bees.
“We know each other’s game inside out. We’ve played with each other for four years,” he added.
“It is a case of trying to find the right balance between that and mixing in with the rest of the team.
“We’re Brentford players now and that is what we have got focus on.”
