Danny Kedwell has shrugged off concerns over his fitness by insisting he is ready for action should he be selected for AFC Wimbledon’s high-profile season-opener with Luton Town on Saturday.

Speaking after Monday night’s 6-1 thrashing of North Greenford United, Dons boss Terry Brown suggested Kedwell had yet to reach the required fitness levels.

But the 26-year-old striker admitted he was mystified by the comments.

Kedwell said: “That is the first I have heard of it and I am stunned.

“I honestly do not know what he is talking about - I played against Farnborough on Saturday and there was no problem at all.

“Terry has certainly not mentioned anything to me.

“I think some people read too much into pre-season - for me it is simply about getting fit, not so much about playing well.”

Boss Brown has no long-term concerns over the striker, but admitted Kedwell's enforced lay-off had him lagging behind the pack.

Brown said: "Danny had to miss the first two weeks of pre-season training so he is that step behind the other players.

"But it is not a big issue - we have something like 14 games in the first two months so everybody will be match fit pretty quickly."

Despite the signings of Luke Moore and teenage star Peter Rapson, Kedwell is looking forward to rekindling his partnership with Jon Main that flourished in the Blue Square South last season.

And the forward insists they can replicate that success if given the opportunity.

He added: “Everyone knows that me and Jon can cut it.

“We just need to be given time to get it working at this level.

“I honestly cannot wait - Saturday will be a massive game for us.

“For a lot of the players it will be one of the biggest games we will ever be involved in and I just hope to get selected.”
