Leatherhead-based Barwell Motor Sports’ team colour is racing green, but two of their number swapped to Chelsea blue for the day to race to victory in the inaugural profantastic Golf Challenge, writes Lee Todd.

The event allows football fans compete against rival supporters on the fairways and Barwell founder Richard Lemmer and team technician Mike Brown took pole position as West Ham and Chelsea went head to head.

A total of 70 Stableford points was enough to see 12-handicapper Lemmer and Brown, who plays off 18, finish two points clear of their nearest Blues rivals in front of the Sky Sports cameras at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club.

Lemmer, 65, admitted: “We didn’t really expect to win.

“This was Mike’s first competition like this and normally people will come through with scores better than their handicaps and we were pretty much on ours, but fortunately it was good enough today.”

His 24-year-old partner added: “It was playing consistent golf that won it for us but really we just went out to enjoy it.

“It was brilliant. The two guys we played with were great and very good golfers.

“Playing with the Sky cameras was really good and added something to the day, but it puts a lot of pressure on you on the first tee. I think even the pros must get nervous for their first shot.”

As Chelsea champions the pair will travel to Portugal later this year for the grand final at a five-star resort where they will compete against qualifiers from heats around the UK, and pairs of Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle, Rangers and Celtic fans will also be among those vying to win the overall title.

Brown added: “We might be racing in Portugal towards the end of the year so it’ll be unbelievable to go there twice in a couple of months and get to play some golf in the sunshine.

“The football side of things adds an extra dimension to it because it feels like you’re playing for your club when you’re wearing your team’s colours.”
