Bees boss Andy Scott has warned his side’s League One rivals new strike pair Steve Kabba and Charlie MacDonald will only improve.
The duo started Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Huddersfield Town as Scott overhauled his starting line-up in the wake of last week’s 2-0 defeat at high-flying Charlton Athletic.
Carl Cort sat the game out with a knee injury - as did Ryan Dickson - while Danny Foster and Sam Saunders were rested as star defender Alan Bennett returned to the starting line-up which ultimately saw loanee James Wilson switched to full-back.
MacDonald and Kabba, who drew a blank at the weekend, are the fourth partnership Scott has deployed up front in the league this season and the Griffin Park chief is confident they will deliver as they return to full fitness.
“Steve and Charlie played together in the reserves on Tuesday and did OK, but there is still a lot more to come. They are still nowhere near 100% fit,” he said.
“They worked hard and held the ball up well. There are some things we need to work on, but they will come.
“With centre forwards you need to build partnerships and it doesn’t happen overnight. I’m sure they will relish the opportunity to play together again.
Cort is expected to be fit for the weekend’s visit of Bristol Rovers, while Dickson is likely to be given another week off as he recovers from a medial ligament injury.
Saunders and Fosters made way for Wilson and Cleveland Taylor at the weekend and the re-shuffle paid dividends as the Bees comfortably kept a free-scoring Huddersfield side quiet and even threatened to come home with maximum points.
It meant Brentford avoided back-to-back defeats, but Scott admitted he was disappointed his side couldn’t return to winning ways.
“It’s the nature of the squad that we always want to improve and pick up more points,” he added.
“Inevitably we want to get out of this league as soon as we possibly can. It might take a while to do that, but as long as we are learning from every game then we’ll get there in the end.
“We kept them at bay and didn’t really look like we were going to concede. The whole team defended very well and that is what we have to do. We know we’ve got the ability to go and score goals and create chances.”
And Scott feels his side are unlucky not to have made more of a promising start to the campaign.
He said: “We’ve got to look at the first seven games we’ve played in the league and if we had said we would have 10 points everyone around Brentford would have been ecstatic.
“We’re a little bit disappointed that we haven’t got more points.”
